Environmental Impact[edit]

Sustainability Efforts[edit]

Burt's Bees stands out in the beauty and personal care industry for its dedication to sustainability efforts. Throughout the growth of the company environmental responsibility has been a priority. As a company that strives to be an earth friendly company, Burt's Bees provides products, packaging, and services to help sustainability efforts. Allowing Burt's Bees to be a leader in the personal care sector for sustainability.

Burt's Bees has brought their attention to their packaging regarding their impact on the environments. Burt's Bees take many precautions in their packaging. Using post-consumer recycled materials in their packaging, incorporating biodegradable and recyclable packaging wherever possible is the standard. The lip balms are packed into a cardboard tube that can be composted and recycled. [1] In the industry of baby cosmetics, North American brands such as Burt's Bees, only had about 52% of the companies (20 out of 38) make a statement about sustainability on their packaging. [1] Burt's Bees is one of the few companies taking the initiative.

Burt's Bees efforts include partnerships with companies like TerraCycle which is a company focused on the recycling of materials that are not easily recyclable in common curbside pickup situations. This company promotes and revolves around the Circular economy and the reuse of plastics to reduce emissions. Through partnerships with innovative companies such as Burt's Bees and willing people, TerraCycle has been able to connect with over 80 million people in over 21 countries resulting to about 5 billion pieces of waste from landfills. [2]

Risk Factors[edit]

With all the sustainability efforts put forward by Burt's Bees their impact is still deficient. A concern comes from the purchase of Burt's Bees by Clorox because now the corporation is not legally bound to the standard of sustainability as before. Clorox is now legally obligated to decrease the sustainability of its own or any of its subsidiaries if it decreases profits. [3]

Impact on the Company[edit]

Burts Bees feels the impacts of climate change in the bee keeping associated with their products and business. Climate change impacts on bee keeping are linked to lower honey yield and higher winter loss in bee colonies, negatively effecting companies like Burts Bees. [4] Climate change creates geographical advantages and changes where bee products are sourced from which creates opportunities for some and puts others at a disadvantage. [4]
