"Slow Walking" is a song by Australian electronic dance music group The Avalanches taken from their extended play Undersea Community (1999). The song was composed by group members Darren Seltmann, Robbie Chater, Gordon McQuilten and Tony Diblasi and produced by the former two under their alias Bobbydazzler. A downtempo electronic dance song, "Slow Walking" features lead vocals from Seltmann.

After its initial release, the song would be included in multiple releases by the group, including the "Frontier Psychiatrist" single (2000) and the extended play At Last Alone (2001).

Background

[edit]

In the liner notes of the "Frontier Psychiatrist" single, the song is specifically listed as having been recorded on "the first day of spring, 1996."[1] Group member Robbie Chater himself has stated that it "really was the first day of spring when we did ['Slow Walking']."[2] Chater and group member Darren Seltmann spent much of 1996 completing a demo tape at RMIT Studio in Melbourne. "Slow Walking" was one of thirty tracks included on the demo, which was sent out to various labels.[3]

Release

[edit]

Following the release of the group's EP El Producto, Leo Silvermann signed the Avalanches to his label, Rex Records. The group's first release on the label was the exclusive United Kingdom four-track EP Undersea Community, which was released in March 1999.[4] All four tracks on the record had been taken from the original demo tape, and among the tracks was "Slow Walking".[3] It marked the song's first release on a commercially available record.

Following the release of Undersea Community, the track would again resurface on two releases: "Frontier Psychiatrist" (2000), the second single from the Avalanches' major-label debut Since I Left You[5] and the 2001 Japan-exclusive EP At Last Alone.[5] Regarding the song's release, Chater has stated: "['Slow Walking'] was a track from the original thirty-song demo that Darren and I did, and whenever we needed a new b-side or early on when we were releasing seven inches, we would go back to that and grab a couple of songs."[2]

Production and composition

[edit]

"Slow Walking" was composed by group members Darren Seltmann, Robbie Chater, Gordon McQuilten and Tony Diblasi[6]. The song was produced by Chater and Seltmann.[1] Seltmann also provides lead vocals on the song.[2] Regarding Seltmann's vocal performance, Chater has said: "I was thinking Darren sounds like Kermit the Frog on that, a 'Rainbow Connection' kind of vibe."[2]
