Opinions

A major Irish poet, his poems represent an enormous advance … I know of nothing quite like them: it makes me think we have moved a generation beyond even the accomplishmnent of Heaney.' Hugh Kenner

I can't think of a modern poet, or of a modern poetic technique, which could catch the pity and terror quite as Egan catches it. Desmond Egan's Collected Poems is an achievement to be reckoned with. A stream in the midst of the stone of contemporary Irish poetry. Augustine Martin University College, Dublin.

Desmond Egan can be modern in a way that his Irishness does not fall into the background.Csilla Bertha, Hungary

His poems touch every aspect of our life.Egan is a remarkable poet. Studs Terkel Chicago.

I consider his work with simultaneous voices, which creates a new multi-poem, shaded, leveled, nuanced and moving , a major innovation. Reloy Garcia Creighton University.

Desmond Egan is a major poet … (Brian Arkins, NUI, Galway

In the crisis of identity of modern Ireland, poetry has been secularised – whereas in Egan almost every poem has a metaphysical aspect. He is, for me, the most remarkable pet writing in English. Birgit Bramsback (Uppsala University Sweden).
