Pop melankolis, also known as lagu cengeng, is a subgenre of Indo pop music popular in the 1970s-1980s and the mid-1990s, characterized by slow tempo, sentimental themes and influences from 1950s American traditional pop. This subgenre was briefly banned in the late 1980s by Harmoko.

Etymology

The term pop melankolis was popularized by one of the prominent composers and songwriters from this subgenre, Rinto Harahap.

The term lagu cengeng or pop cengeng was coined by Harmoko
