House of Ruth is a West Coast domestic violence agency. It was founded in 1978, by a group of students at the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, CA. The organization officially began a year earlier in 1977, when the founding members created a temporary domestic violence hotline for a group project, with local volunteers. Upon recognizing the astronomically high demand for emergency intimate partner violence resources, the students banded together a year later to license the hotline under a 501(c)3 and expand their services to community referrals and crisis intervention.
