Introduction
[edit]Hi, I'm Hoylemd. Just finished my 4th year of a Computer Science Degree at the University of Guelph. I'm also better know as Batman [citation needed].
Personal Life
[edit]I'm 22 years old, and from a small town north of Toronto called Uxbridge. I really like geek culture stuff (sci-fi, anime, video games, etc), and Enjoy cooking a great deal. I also have a job with the University doing IT support for the Student Housing Department. I was also a Residence Assistant in my second year, an experience that impacted me greatly, and I cite as one of the greatest contributors who who I am today.
Education and Academic Career
[edit]As previously stated, I've just completed my 4th year of a Bachelor of Computing degree. I had some unfortunate results in some courses, however, so I need to return in the fall to finish up. I'm taking CIS 2050 over Distance Education now to lighten my fall courseload a bit.
Hobbies
[edit]I have a large number of hobbies. I cook, I game, I program, I Warham(mer 40,000). I also watch a number of television shows semi-regularely.
Cooking
[edit]My interest in cooking began in grade 8, where my class had a year-long project to pick up a skill. I originally started with calligraphy, but found it too boring. When I attempted to make Kraft Dinner for my mother and sister one weekend, it became clear that the culinary arts were something i could improve upon, as Kraft Dinner Soup turned out to be an unacceptable form of sustenance. Since then I've had cooking jobs at four different restauraunts, and learned a great deal about food. I rarely innovate in the kitchen, but recently I've been experimenting with Balsamic Vinegar and Olive Oil. This has turned out to be a delicious combination when used with grape tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken meat, and pasta.
Gaming
[edit]I hesitate to name a single genre of game that is my favourite. My current playlist is Minecraft, Portal 2, Tropico 2: Pirate's Cove and Final Fantasy X. Video games have been a part of my life more than anything else for as long as I can remember. In fact one of my earliest verifiable memories is of playing a game called Math Dodger on my father's computer when I was 5. I game on my PC, xbox 360, Wii, Playstation 2, and my DS Lite. Minecraft is the game I spend the most time on. It's attraction stems from it's massively open-ended game play, and incredible community. There are over over 8 million players of the game[1] , and it is quickly becoming one of the most successful indie games of all time. My top 10 favourite games of all time would be:
- Master of Orion 2
- Portal 2
- Portal
- Final Fantasy X
- Tropico 2: Pirate's Cove
- Minecraft
- Final Fantasy VII
- Fallout 3
- Command & Conquer: Red Alert
- FreeLancer
Programming
[edit]In High school I dabbled in Visual Basic, but did not really get interested in programming until I came to university. I currently have a number of projects on the go. I'm making a programming language called ch (c-Hoyle), and designing a game based upon Tropico 2: Pirate's Cove and Master of Orion 2: Battle at Antares. My language of choice is c/c++, but I'm quite capeable with Java. I've recently discovered an interest in Compilers and other low-level programming, so I'd like to write compilers for a number of languages.
Warhammer 40,000
[edit]In second year I started to play Warhammer 40,000. That hobbie has been on hold for a few months now, as I simply haven't had time to play lately. I have armies for a number of races: Space Marines(Raven Guard), Orks, Tau Empire, and Imperial Guard. I usually play my Space Marines, as my strategy has proven quite effective against most opponents. My general army build is something like this:
- Shadow-Captain Kayvaan Shrike, joined to an Assault Squad
- Chaplain Ortan Cassius joined to an Assault Terminator Squad, mounted in a Land Raider Crusader
- Scout squad with Sergeant Torias Telion, with Camo cloaks
- Techmarine to bolster ruins for the scouts to defend
The army will be rounded out by Tactical Squads and a vehicle or two, but these are the key players.
