In the late 1500's, the great Greek explorer, Hilarious Asparagus, set sail for the New World. He disembarked from the port city of Salonika which had been under Ottoman rule for some 100 years. He had arranged a with a fellow sailor whom he had been previously acquainted with during a voyage to the Holy Land. The sailor's name was Josef, a Jew from Salonika. The Jewish population was usually half or the majority of the city population [1].
Hilarious writes in his diary that when he came to the ship, he met a large group of mercenaries. These mercenaries were to come along and protect the crew from the overwhelming amount of pirates in the west of the Atlantic Ocean. ever since the New World's discovery, the Spanish would send voyages to bring back much of the gold found [2]
