Amazon River Basin (IRLN)[edit]
Amazon River Basin Basics[edit]
The Amazon River is the second longest river in the world. It's basin area covered nearly 6 million square kilometers includes almost every countries of South America, outside Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. The Amazon River is also the largest one in the world by its water discharge.
Countries and Populaiton[edit]
All the countries that located within Amazon River Basin are developing countries. Although the basin covered nearly 6 million square kilometers in land area, the average population density is just 4.5 people/square kilometers. The highest average population density happens in Ecuador that located at the west side of the basin.
Population by Countries and its desnity[edit]
Country | Area (km^3) | Population | Population Density (people/km^3) |
---|---|---|---|
Bolivia | 703423 | 6337000 | 9.01 |
Brazil | 3654439 | 7968000 | 2.18 |
Columbia | 366819 | 910100 | 2.48 |
Ecuador | 123295 | 1515000 | 12.29 |
Guyana | 14831 | 18100 | 1.22 |
French Guiana | 139 | 0 | 0 |
Peru | 951855 | 9295000 | 9.77 |
Suriname | 1566 | 1700 | 1.09 |
Venezuela | 40329 | 4200 | 0.10 |
Climate and Vegetation[edit]
Since Equator crosses through the middle of Amazon River Basin. Most of the area are under tropical climates. For those areas near the equators, it is Tropical Rain forest Climate and Tropical Monsoon or Tropical Savanna for other areas. Therefore, the top ranked vegetation covered through Amazon River Basin are Rain Forest and Evergreen Broadleaf Forest.
Water Discharge[edit]
The Amazon River ranked the largest river in the world by its water discharge. The total discharge of Amazon River are 6374.5 cubic kilometers. Among the 6374.5 cubic kilometers discharge, Brazil contributes 76% of this number at 4846.49 cubic kilometers since it covered the largest land area among all the 9 countries.
Attached is the water distribution by countries.
Water Issues and Management[edit]
Water Issues[edit]
Although very few areas of the Amazon River Basin are being irrigated. There are 4 big projects and constructions on the river. Brazil, Bolivia, Columbia and Ecuador has 1 for each. As the result, not only due to the high evapotranspiration of high temperature, also the extraction of water, Brazil and Columbia have the the largest surface runoff each year. These two countries and Venezuela also experience the most stressful water stress.
Water Runoff and Water Stress by Countries[edit]
Country | Water Runoff (mm/yr) | Water Stress (m^3/person/yr) |
---|---|---|
Bolivia | 101130 | 11000 |
Brazil | 1594500 | 731000 |
Columbia | 243063 | 98000 |
Ecuador | 21578 | 2000 |

Water Management[edit]
Among Amazon River Basin, there are 6 treaties and 9 River Basin Organizations among 9 different countries.
