Shrek

Shrek is a 2001 animated film directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson. Also, released by DreamWorks Pictures. This film is an American CGI filmed based off the 1990's children's picture book, also called Shrek, by William Steig. The actually idea of Shrek is based on a wrestler whose appearance was affected as a result of acromegaly, his name is Maurice Tillet. His appearance helped with the creation of the beloved animated character Shrek. This film as written by Terry Rossio, Joe Stillman, Roger S. H. Schulman, and Ted Elliott. The start studded cast consists of Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as the Donkey, and John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad. The basis of the film revolves around a miserable ogre named Shrek (Myers) who finds a home in a swamp that is later overrun by fairy tales characters who were exiled from their kingdom by the ruler, Lord Farquaad (Lithgow). However, with the Donkey's (Murphy) help, Shrek makes a deal with Lord Farquaad to save Princess Fiona (Diaz), in return for Shrek to gain control of his swamp and no longer have it infested with fairy tale characters. Shrek is the original film in the Shrek film series. Also, one of the first films to offer a 3D viewing experience.

Plot

Shrek is not your typical fairy tale character, he is quite the opposite. Being extremely anti-social and territorial over his swamp, where he loves the solitude and quietness of no one bothering him in his swamp. He lives a very dirty, yet quaint life in the comfort of his swamp where hygiene is not a thing. However, his life is quickly turned upside down and interrupted when the dwarfish Lord Farquaad of Duloc banishes a majority of annoying fairy tale characters. Who then go on to welcome themselves in to Shrek's swamp, making his home now their own. Leaving Shrek, the big green ogre more miserable than before. Angered and overwhelmed by the invasion of fairy tale creatures, Shrek pays Lord Farquaad a visit, demanding they be moved somewhere else. Of course, he has no choice but to allow the very outgoing, very talkative Donkey, who was also exiled from the kingdom, to tag along and guide him to Duloc.

As Shrek and the Donkey journey over to Duloc, Farquaad is presented with a Magic Mirror, telling him that he is required to marry a princess in order to be crowned king. Therefore, Lord Farquaad picks Princess Fiona, who again is not your typical princess. The challenge is that the Princess is imprisoned in a castle guarded by a Dragon. Unwilling, to be a man and rescue the Princess himself he organizes a tournament where the winner will receive the "privilege" of performing the task to rescue Fiona on the Prince's behalf. Once the Donkey and Shrek arrive to Duloc, Farquaad announced that whoever kills the ogre will be crowned the victor. To the surprise of Farquaad Shrek and Donkey easily defeat his knights. Leaving Farquaad to proclaim them champions and make a deal with Shrek. The deal being if he rescues Fiona, Farquaad will relocate all the fairy tale creatures that invaded Shrek's swamp.

Shrek and Donkey venture to the castle and are immediately greeted by the Dragon who quickly sets out its sights to attack them. Shrek successfully locates Fiona, who is disgusted by his lack of romanticism; they flee the castle after Shrek rescues Fiona and then Donkey since he was captured by the Dragon. Shrek covered in body amour, finally removes his helmet and reveal he is an ogre. Fiona stubbornly refuses to go to Duloc, demanding Lord Farquaad arrives in person to save her. However, Shrek carries her to Duloc against her will. That night Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona set up camp and once Fiona is alone in the cave, Shrek confides with Donkey about his insecurities. Shrek talks about his fear of rejection over his appearance. Unbeknownst to Shrek and Donkey, Fiona was awake and overheard their conversation, she decides to be kind to Shrek. The following day, the trio is harassed by Robin Hood and his bend of Merry Men, leaving Fiona no choice but to unleash her martial arts skills on them. This left Shrek wildly impressed with Fiona, they begin to fall in love.

When the three of them near Duloc, Fiona decides to take shelter in a windmill for the evening. Donkey entered into the windmill a little while later and discovers the Fiona has transformed into an ogre, leaving him shocked. Fiona later reveals that she has been cursed since childhood, forced to transform into an ogre overnight until sunrise when she returns to herself. She explains to Donkey that only "true love's kiss" will break the spell and change her to "love's true form". While this is occurring, Shrek is preparing himself to confess his feelings to Fiona, at the same time he overhears Fiona referred to herself as an "ugly beast". Shrek assumes she is talking about him, therefore he angrily leaves and returns the next morning with Farquaad. Fiona was left hurt and confused by Shrek's sudden hostility, leaving Fiona to accept Farquaad's hand in marriage, requesting they be married before nightfall.

Now that Shrek has completed his deal with Lord Farquaad and returned Princess Fiona to him, all the fairy tale creatures are kicked out of his swamp. Also, Shrek abandons Donkey returning to his solitude in his swamp. Unfortunately, Shrek soon realizes that despite longing for his privacy again, he is depressed and misses Fiona. Donkey unable to leave his new found friendship with Shrek behind, returns to the swamp and confronts Shrek, explains that Fiona was not referring to him when she said "ugly beast", Fiona was instead referring to someone else. Donkey pushes Shrek to express his feeling to Fiona before it is too late and she marries the evil Lord Farquaad. Shrek and Donkey put aside their differences and make up, quickly venturing off together to Duloc by riding the Dragon that once held Fiona captive, but is now Donkey's friend. With little time to spare, Shrek interrupts the ceremony before it is over, exclaiming to Fiona that Farquaad is only marrying her to become king. As this happens, the sun begins to set and Fiona transforms into an ogre in front of everyone, helping Shrek realize and understand what her overheard her say in the windmill. Lord Farquaad is outraged, embarrassed, and appalled ordering Shrek to be executed and Fiona detained. Thankfully, the two ogres are saved when Dragon, alongside Donkey, break in, completely devouring Farquaad.

Now, Shrek and Fiona profess their love for one another and celebrate their differences as well as similarities to one another. In this heart felt moment they share a kiss and Fiona's curse is officially broken, meaning she has found her one true love and will become her truest self. Princess Fiona is permanently made into an ogre against her expectation, however Shrek reassures her the she is still absolutely beautiful. Princess Fiona and Shrek get married in Shrek's swamp with all the fairy tale characters who were banished from the Kingdom of Duloc. They all cheered in attendance to the beautiful wedding. Shrek and Fiona then leave for their honeymoon, living happily ever after!
