Pistono founded "Grilli biellesi" in 2007. This non-profit association worked for the protection of the rights of citizens with interests in energy, connectivity, waste and information.[17][18][19][20]

Apart from working at a company in Verona he continued his studies and received a degree in computer science from the University of Verona in 2009. In the same year, he won an international competition for blogging and journalism of the European Journalism Center and visited the COP15 in Copenhagen.[21][22][23][24]

He founded The Zeitgeist Movement Italy in mid 2008[25][26] and started writing his first book, Robots Will Steal Your Job, But That's OK: How to Survive the Economic Collapse and Be Happy, in 2011. The book was listed as a best-seller and was published in English, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Korean.[27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35]

He later joined Singularity University, where he graduated in 2012 on scholarship.[36][37][38] This project, a partnership between NASA and Google, takes place at the NASA Research Park in Mountain View, California, and selects students based on their on ability to positively impact one billion people in ten years.[39]

Pistono co-authored with Roman Yampolskiy a paper titled “Unethical research: How to create a malevolent artificial intelligence”. The paper was presented at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI-16), Ethics for Artificial Intelligence Workshop (AI-Ethics-2016) and received significant media attention.[40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48]
