The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in 2012

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Ieud Deal is a Romanian-Orthodox wooden church built in the middle of the 1800th century. In 1999 it was listed as by UNESCO as a world heritage site, along with seven other wooden churches in Maramures. The inner walls and vaults are painted by Alexandru Ponehalski, Maramures's leading traditional painter at the time. Outside the church is a cemetry; a path called "Way of the Cross" leads to a separate bell tower.

Background

[edit]

The church was built after a previous church at the site was burnt down during the Tatar invasion of Marmures in 1717. The exact time is unknown, but is assumed to be in the mid-18h century and the chuch was decorated inside by the painter Alexandru Ponehalski in 1782.
