Beyond All Reason is an open-source real-time strategy video game for PC, heavily based on, influenced and inspired by Cavedog Entertainment's Total Annihilation. It runs on the Spring Engine, and began as a visual upgrade of Balanced Annihilation, introducing new models, sounds, maps and GUI. However, it quickly began surpassing that scope with additions such as Single Player Missions, improved AI, a new form of PvE called Scavengers, and completely new infrastructure. The unit roster features nearly 400 unique units, split between the two playable factions, Cortex and Armada. Matchmaking, automated tournaments and clan battles are among some of the planned features for the near future. Online play currently supports up to 16 players. While the game is currently in alpha, it aims to release on Steam in 2022.

History[edit]

Beyond All Reason's beginning starts with UberHack, which was one of the most popular mods for Total Annihilation, which added a handful of new units and rebalanced a lot of the existing units to ensure previously underused ones would see more play. Absolute Annihilation was another TA mod that built on UberHack and added many more units, bringing the total number of units in the game at the time to roughly 366. It was ported to run on the Spring engine and quickly picked up a sizable following there. After development on Absolute Annihilation was discontinued, a fork known as Balanced Annihilation was created to fulfil the same goals of balancing units for online play and adding quality of life improvements.

In the winter of 2010, two artists, Mr Bob and PyramidHe@d, began work on remodelling all of BA's units, simply to improve the appearance of the game. This spontaneous effort prompted interest in a full rework of Balanced Annihilation that would be free from any original Total Annihilation content, and could be freshly licensed. With the help of Beherith, and several years of work, every unit in BA had been remodelled with entirely new textures, sounds and animations. Since then, Beherith, Floris, IceXuick and various other contributors have been steadily building Beyond All Reason up to the game as is seen today.
