Setting[edit]

Isshu (イッシュ地方, Isshu-chihō) is the region featured in Pokémon Black and White. According to the development team, Isshu is "located far away from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh."[1] In the Pokémon Pia book, director Junichi Masuda revealed that Isshu was modeled after New York City.[2] The games' Hiun City takes the place of lower Manhattan and the Sky Arrow Bridge serves as a stand in for the Brooklyn Bridge. Isshu also has an airport, an amusement park, and several icy mountains. In addition to a diversity of new landscapes, the Isshu region is also home to a diversity of people, such as the black Gym Leader Aloe and non-player characters modeled after American football players.

Plot[edit]

Like other Pokémon games, Black and White's gameplay is linear; the main events occur in a fixed order. The protagonist of Pokémon Black and White is a sixteen-year old child who sets its first step to journey to the Isshu region to become the Pokémon master. At the beginning of the games, the player chooses either Tsutarja, Pokabu, or Mijumaru as his or her starter Pokémon and gift from Professor Araragi (アララギ博士, Araragi-Hakase). The protagonists' friends, Cheren (チェレン, Cheren) and Bel (ベル, Beru), are also his/her rivals and are Pokémon Trainers that occasionally battles the player.

As the journey of the player continues, he/she may encounter the series' main antagonist, the Team Plasma which was based from the Knights Templar.[3] The first time the player encounters members of Team Plasma was right after entering the town next to its hometown, where he will be able to attend a small gathering of the people. In this event, the player saw one of Plasma sages, Geechisu (ゲーチス, Gēchisu) as he speak something about major changes in the region as well as the world. Soon after, the player learned that Team Plasma is headed by N (エヌ, N), a mysterious man who plans to separate the Pokémon from the human world. As the game progresses, the player will meet several members of the Team Plasma sages and their predictions about a more balanced world.

Before the player seek to obtain its eighth and last Gym badge, Professor Araragi's father approached him/her and talked about Team Plasma's plan to obtain a legendary Pokémon governing balance. The player and his rival Cheren followed Team Plasma towards the Dragon Spiral Tower, only to discover that N already captured such legendary. In Black, N will capture Zekrom, the Black Yin Pokémon, while in White, it is Reshiram, the White Yang Pokémon.

After the capture, Isshu region Pokémon Champion Adeku (アデク) appears and told the player that such action of N will not bring balance, but destruction of both Pokémon and human worlds. Adeku then flew to the Ancient Castle ruins to follow Team Plasma. Inside the ruins, everyone found Geechisu, who say some things about the fate of Zekrom and Reshiram, and the Pokémon League. Soon after, the player will receive the Light (for Black) or Dark Stone (for White) which can be used to defeat N later.

The games' two main goals are defeating the Elite Four to become the new Champion and completing the Pokédex by capturing, evolving, and trading to obtain all 649 Pokémon. Right after the player defeated the Elite Four and go to the Pokémon championship and battle Adeku, he/she discover that N already defeated Adeku and is now the Pokémon Champion of the Isshu region. The cutscenes are followed by the emergence of N's Castle from the undergrounds of Pokémon League and destroying several structures around it. After gaining access to the castle, the player saw N sitting to his throne and tells something about their plan of balance restoration, when he called on his captured legendary Pokémon. When the Pokémon appears, the Stone that the player received earlier glows, calling the version mascot of the game being played. In Black, the Light Stone will shine and Reshiram will appear. On the other hand, the Dark Stone will shine and Zekrom will appear in White. Either case, the player must capture the Pokémon appeared to be able to continue the gameplay and defeat N. After defeating N and Geechisu, N will release his captured legendary and marked the end of the game.

After saving, the player will wake up on his/her hometown. Downstairs, he/she noticed that Looker, a character from Pokémon Platinum appears and upgrades the player's Pokédex into a National Pokédex. After that, the player may gain access to the eastern half of the Isshu region and some version-exclusive areas such as the Black City in Black and White City in White. In addition to that, the player may be able to battle the Pokémon Champion of Sinnoh region Cynthia and obtain more technical and hidden machines. To become the Pokémon Champion of the Isshu region, the player must re-battle Isshu's Elite Four again, who has more powerful Pokémon than the first, followed by the Pokémon Champion Adeku himself.
