Crisis (The Worthless Album) is the debut album by German singer-songwriter, music producer, and visual artist Valentin Hansen. It was released on July 29, 2021, through Killing A Friend.

Concept

[edit]

The album is divided into 30 tracks,[1] each lasting exactly 29 seconds. This duration is deliberately chosen because most streaming services, such as Spotify and Apple Music, only count a stream as payable if it surpasses 30 seconds[2]. By creating tracks that fall just short of this threshold, Hansen ensures that his album generates no revenue, effectively rendering it financially "worthless."[3][4]

Release and promotion

[edit]
The click farm in Berlin

To promote the album, Hansen employed methods that mirrored the album's conceptual critique of the music industry:

Exhibition with a click farm: Hansen set up an exhibition[5] where multiple phones streamed the album continuously, day and night. Despite the constant streaming, the album's stream count remained at zero due to the 29-second track lengths.

"Worthless" vinyl records: Vinyl records of the album were sold in 14 cities worldwide,[6][7][8][9] with a retail price of ¤0.00, emphasizing on the album's financial worthlessness.

Critical reception

[edit]

The release of Crisis (The Worthless Album) sparked discussions about the sustainability of current music distribution models.[10][11][12] The album serves as a commentary on the devaluation of music in the streaming era.
