Jason Scott Gerrard (born May 30th 1980), is a British television and radio presenter, television producer and entrepreneur. He is the host of four E! UK flagship shows, "E! News UK", "The Daily Ten", "Jason Lately" and "Good Morning UK". He also hosts the BBC Three "New Years Eve Bash" every year, and the Official UK R&B Singles Chart on BBC Radio One since January 2010.

His first job was at the age of 16, in 1996, when he appeared as the new co-host of E! UK's biggest show "E! News UK". He continued in that role until 2002 when he joined Five, to help the rebrand of the channel. He was announced as a lead news reader on "Five News", a role he stayed with for a year before joining Liz Fuller as the co-host of "Take Five", a daily lunchtime chat show.

He and Fuller left the show after just six months, and Gerrard was chosen as the host of X Factor spin-off, "The Xtra Factor". He stayed in the role for three series, and left in 2006 after not being offered a job on the main programme. In 2005, he began hosting "BBC Three News", a 30 minute broadcast. The show was discontinued after 7 months and Gerrard re-joined "E! News UK" alongside Angellica Bell. In November 2006, it was revealed Jason would be re-joining BBC Three to host their coverage of the New Years Eve celebrations. In 2006, he was joined by Girls Aloud, in 2007 and 2008 he was joined by the Sugababes and since 2009 he has been joined by his friend and comedian Russell Howard.

On January 1st 2007, he and Angellica Bell began hosting "The Daily Ten". The show features the top ten showbiz stories of the day and will undergo a revamp from March 1st. In October 2007, he began hosting his own late-night comedy show "Jason Lately". The show has been renewed through 2012. From 2008 until 2010, Jason hosted "Behind The Music" which features performances from international music superstars. From January 2009, he has hosted the Radio One show, "UK R&B Official Singles Chart". On January 4th 2010, he launched E! UK's first morning chat show, "Good Morning UK". The show is a huge success, and has been renewed until January 2011.

Career

[edit]

E! News UK (1996-2002)

[edit]

In May 1996, Gerrard won a competition to host the weekend broadcasts of E! News UK. His first episode aired on July 1st 1996. He co-hosted the show on Saturdays and Sundays with Michelle Morgan until July 1998 when he was promoted to hosting the show on all weekday broadcasts. He joined June Sarpong hosting on Mondays-Fridays, whilst the weekend shows were axed and 60 second updates aired instead througout the day.

In 2001, June Sarpong left the show, and left Gerrard to present the show alone. He decided to quit the show in 2002 due to wanting to expand his work. His last episode aired on July 1st 2002, exactly six years after his first episode.

The Music Show (1998-2000)

[edit]

After his success of E! News UK, E! gave Gerrard his own show. "The Music Show" aired weekly on Mondays from September 14th 1998. The show comprised of 45 minute interviews and 15 minute performances from a weekly special guest. The show ran for two years, but was ended by Gerrard when he began to feel like the show was strained.

A special two hour show was aired on December 29th 2000 to mark the end of the show. Re-runs of the show did air until 2002.

Five News (2002-2003)

[edit]

After leaving E! News UK, Channel 5 asked Gerrard to become the face of their 2002 relaunch and rebrand to Five. His role was that of a news reader of "Five News" evening bulletins alongside Louisa Preston. He left this role after a year, becoming bored of the seriousness of news programming. His last episode aired on October 31st 2003.

Take Five (2004)

[edit]

After finishing on Five News, the now established presenter was asked to join the channel's new lunchtime chat programme "Take Five". He worked on the show alongside Liz Fuller, but they both left the series after six months. The final episode aired on July 2nd 2004.

The Xtra Factor (2004-2006)

[edit]

After finishing his Five contract, he signed his first contract to present X Factor spin-off "The Xtra Factor" on ITV2. He presented the first series in 2004, second series in 2005 and third series in 2006.

He was originally planning to return in 2007, but when main show host Kate Thornton was sacked, Jason was turned down to host the main show. As a result, he decided to not re-sign a contract and didn't return to the show for series three in 2007.

BBC Three News (2005-2006)

[edit]

On August 1st 2005, Jason presented the first show of "BBC Three News", a 30 minute, five weekly episode news broadcast on BBC Three. After 7 months of success, the show was discontinued as less viewers were tuning in. Two days after the final show on March 31st 2006, Jason returned to his role as host of "E! News UK".

E! News UK (2006-Present)

[edit]

After four years away, Jason returned to a revamped and reformatted "E! News UK" on April 3rd 2006. The show now aired at 7am, 12noon, and 5pm Monday-Friday, with a 11pm broadcast added at the weekend.

He was joined on the show by former CBBC presenter Angellica Bell for weekday broadcasts, with Andrew Hayden-Smith and Jenny Frost presenting weekend shows. The show underwent another revamp in 2008, with 60 second updates being voiced by Gerrard and Bell every hour.

In 2009, both Gerrard and Bell signed contracts to keep them on the show until December 2012. From March 1st, the show will undergo a set, air times and format change. New bulletins will be shown within Good Morning UK (every 30 minutes), a 30 minute episode at 12 noon, a 30 minute episode at 5pm and a 60 minute episode at 7pm.
