Friesenkampf is a variation of modern pentathlon. Athletes compete in five events: fencing (bouts for three hits either foil or épée) 100 m swimming (breaststroke or freestyle), running, shotput and shooting (10m with air rifle). Friesenkampf was named in honour of Karl Friedrich Friesen, one of the principal promoters of gymnastics in Germany.
The most prominent former Friesenkampf athlete is Britta Heidemann.
