An athlete making a difference, Miyan is the first ever heavyweight boxer from the Muslim community in Cape Town. Hailing from the survivalist community of the Cape Flats, he has dedicated the last 12 years of his existence towards a singular goal, to becoming the heavyweight champion of the world. This path has not been an easy one, and through sheer will and belief in his ability Miyan has kept this dream alive by believing in himself and persevering. And persevere he has, against all odds.

To know Miyan Solomons is to understand the strength of the human spirit. It is in the shadow of adversity, and a society screaming that you're a dreamer who will never make it, that the strength of one's character emerges. It is in the integrity of self, that the strength of one's soul is unleashed. How did Miyan keep this dream alive for 12 years? With no sponsorship, no trainer, no support, and virtually no money? He made it happen for himself. He spent his days slaving away in the gym, honing his body and his talent to become the best fighter that he could be. He spent his nights and weekends running his own nightclub security business to pay for his dream. He sought out the best and biggest promoters in the world, often calling them from public telephones in the middle of the night without them even realising it. Taking sparring jobs from them against their stable of accomplished fighters. Going into this, Miyan always knew that he would be at a great disadvantage; that his level of training and boxing skill would never be on par with them. But he went in there with an open mind and attitude that would allow him to grow as a boxer and as a human being.

Many of us have gone through life making the safe choices, and were left wondering how different our lives would have been had we committed to our dreams way back when in the first place and followed them through. Here is an example of such a person, who left the safe stable 9-5 existence, left university to follow his own truer path. And persevere he has, though this path has been fraught with many gut wrenching personally testing obstacles. South Africa has never been the land of dreams, or the land of opportunity. It has been the land of struggle, Miyan Solomons is not a sporting hero, he is a South African hero!!!

Miyan has had to get used to being away from home for long periods of time and has had to sacrifice the home comforts of friends and family just so that he could be surrounded by boxing, just so that he could be surrounded by the sport that was his passion, that was his life. This passion and commitment towards his career has awarded Miyan the No.1 heavyweight ranking in South Africa. Simply put he is the "toughest" fighter out there, according to Loyiso Mtcya, Director of Operations at Boxing South Africa who awarded Miyan the No. 1 ranking in the first place. This No. 1 ranking means that Miyan is represented as the No.1 ranked South African heavyweight fighter worldwide.

On May 31st 2008, at precisely 9.30pm at Emperors Palace, boxing promoters, fans and media stood up and collectively asked one question: "Who is Miyan Solomons and where did he come from?"

Solomons, challenging for the South African Heavyweight Title, seemed to come out of nowhere, with all the power and finesse not seen since the days of Corrie Sanders in his prime or Francois Botha.

Fighting for the South African heavyweight title, marks a pivotal point in the career of Solomons, a Cape Town based boxer who has spent much of his boxing career fighting internationally, in which he faced such notable opponents as current IBF Inter-Continental Champion and world ranked no. 13, Oleg Platov, Don King managed "Super Mario" Preskar and Andreas Sidon.

The last three years have been significant ones in the career of this exciting heavyweight; these highlights include participation in the first sanctioned boxing fights in China in over a decade; tutelage under boxing great and three time world champion, Graciano Rochiggiani; chief sparring partner to Nikolai Valuev, former WBA Heavyweight Champion, and the largest and heaviest champion in boxing history. These incredible opportunities have allowed Miyan Solomons to become a force to be reckoned with in the European boxing arena, culminating in the signing of a two year promotional contract with Sauerland Events, the biggest boxing promoter in Europe. To reach this level of boxing, in one of the toughest sports is the world, does not come without immense discipline, commitment and personal strength. On his own, without the necessary infrastructure and support that most fighters challenging at this level has, Solomons has earned himself the No. 1 ranking in the country.
