Objectives and outcomes

Public Outreach

The objective is to hold a minimum of 4 public events or workshops (Edit-a-thons) during the course of the residency (7 months). Each event will have a target audience and a well-defined subject for editors to work within.

15th month Outcomes:

3 April - 25 people attended a 30 minute presentation on ‘Using Wikipedia as an outreach tool in Welsh Writing in English’ at the annual conference of The Association for Welsh Writing in English at Gregynog Hall, Powys.
11 April - 1 hour Intro to Wikipedia for 4 members of Aberystwyth University communication team .
13 April – Introduction to Editing session for 1 member of the public (requested by the individual)
19-20 April – Supported a lunch time Wikipedia Workshop at OER16 in Edinburgh
19-20 April – Took part in a ‘Ask the Wikimedian’ lunchtime session at OER16 in Edinburgh
19-20 April –Delivered a 30 minuted introduction to Wikipedia session for 10 people at OER16 in Edinburgh
A proposal to invite Wikipedia Visiting Scholars has been excepted by Library management and I am now advertising the Wikipedia Visiting Scholars position .
A Wikidata Visiting Scholar (the first in the world!) has been appointed at NLW, giving the volunteer access to Metadata and resources not publicly available. This is a trial scheme being run with the approval and support of the Wikipedia Library.
Discussions are underway with the Urdd about holding a Wikipedia event at the National Urdd Eisteddfod 2016.
Discussions are underway with NLW about holding a Wikipedia Workshop at this year’s National Eisteddfod.

Education

The aim is to develop a model for taking Wikipedia into Schools and Universities and to hold 4 events with the education sector during the course of the residence (7 months)

Contact has been made with several schools interested in hosting Wikipedia Awareness workshops for sixth form students.
21st May - I will be attending the Wikimedia UK Education meeting in Leicester
We are planning on hosting a Wikipedia Editathon with the support of the Urdd at this year’s National Urdd Eisteddfod.
I have been working with the NLW education team to develop a Wikipedia based module for the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification which would provide students across Wales with a template for organising and running their own Wikipedia Edit-a-thons and part of the qualification. The challenge will sit alongside a number of different challenge and students must choose one to complete each year. NLW will provide support to students who take up the challenge. The proposal is currently being prepared for submission to the WJEC (Examining body). If excepted the scheme would be in place by the beginning of Autumn term.
HWB is an online resource for the Welsh education sector. We are currently investigating whether they would be interesting in utilizing NLW content on Wiki commons.

Volunteer projects

The Wikidata Visiting Scholar is working on creating detailed Wikidata for 5000 Welsh landscape images already uploaded to Wiki Commons by NLW. You can see more here
3 Volunteers are now working on the Dictionary of Welsh Biography project, creating stub articles using entries from DWB as a source.

Staff Workshops and Events

The objective is to engage with staff and to promote digital connections by inviting staff to learn more about Wikipedia and how to edit.

Digital collections for release

The objective is to identify and release digital archives to Wiki-commons, primarily for use in Wikipedia articles.

14th month Outcomes:

1500 Welsh landscape Images were uploaded, completing the upload of the entire Welsh Landscape Collection. You can see the collection here

Collections identified for future upload:

Martin Ridley collection - 800 images (needs to be ingested first). Mostly South Wales streets and industry. Late 19th – early 20th century

Welsh Portraits - 15,000 images (needs to be ingested first). This is the largest single Welsh portrait collection including examples of framed works, etchings and photographs. The collection includes portraits from the middle ages to modern times. (Preparing this collection for upload has now become a priority for the NLW, and it is hoped we can upload before the end of the year – UPDATE : Although this collection remains a NLW priority, the Systems department have confirmed that no work will begin on this collection until at least April 2016)

Building bridges

The objective is to affect changes to NLW culture, guidelines, policy and procedure in order to create a sustainable relationship with Wikimedia UK and Wikipedia and to promote the open knowledge ethos.

14th month Outcomes:

Myself and Dr Dafydd Tudur (head of Digital Access) have begun writing a business case with a strong case for adopting an open access approach similar to the Rijksmuseum. Once completed the document will be made available to Wikimedia UK and presented to the National Library management team
