Jclemens' blocking philosophy

• WP:RBI
• Warnings are for good faith editors who've strayed across the line. New accounts don't get warnings. If an account has made exactly one edit, and that edit is vandalism, then that account is a vandalism-only account, period.
• Most user blocks should be indefinite. That is, if the purpose of a block is to protect the encyclopedia from harm, and the encyclopedia has been seriously harmed by that user, it is appropriate to block that user until and unless s/he acknowledges that the behavior deviated from expected norms and won't do it again. Arbitrarily increasing periods of time might work for IP addresses, but seem pretty pointless for a single person: either the lesson has been learned, or it has not.
  • 3RR is probably the best exception to the above. It's a "corrective action" block, and the community has decided that anyone who gets too carried away needs a reprimand and time to cool off. I don't usually make a habit of 3RR blocks, but if I do, they will be 24H in most cases.
• By and large, blocks are for egregious behavior. Most administrative corrective actions, especially of established users, should be done by making behavioral expectations and consequences clear. While "correct privately, praise publicly" is a great idea, we must do both publicly on Wikipedia, so at the very least reprimands should be kept on the target's talk page, and worded as though others will see them.
