Activity in Synod and District Church[2][edit]
In 1914, Albert was in Chicago on other business and he attended part of one afternoon's session of Synod (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod) at the time and made the acquaintance of Dr. Pfotenhauer, who had been elected President of Synod in the previous convention held in St. Louis, in 1911.
The first convention that A. H. attended the sessions was the Milwaukee convention in 1917. This also was brought about by a co-incident. When his wife, Margreta, and himself and their children, Albert, Willie, and Lillie were on the way to Florida, they had a drawing room in the Pullman to themselves. At the time that they sat in the Pullman proper to get a change, A. H. was approached by a gentleman who asked him where they were from. A. H. told him from Seymour, Indiana. One question after another brought out the facts that the two who occupied the same seat were Charles Dammeyer and a Mr. Fedtman, both from the Trinity Lutheran Congregation, Pastor Matthias.
They soon got talking about Synodical Finances. At Jacksonville, Fla, they parted company. A. H. did not see or hear of these men again until in the following summer. Mr. Dammeyer called A. H. on the phone and told him that he was driving to the Milwaukee Convention and had room for another passenger and asked him whether he would not like to go along. A. H. told him if he could take his pastor, Rev. E. H. Eggers, along too, that he would go. So he arranged to do so.
