C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense
Janet Goliger is an American educator, self-defense instructor, and author. Goliger is a physical education teacher in the Glendale Unified School District in La Crescenta, California, and is a second-degree black belt in Okinawan Shōrin-ryū Shidōkan Karate and a member of the North American Beikoku Shido-kan Karate-do Association. She also holds an additional second-degree black belt in Shorin-Ryu Kobayashi Karate and a green belt in Seki-Ryu Jujutsu. In 1999 Goliger combined her teaching and martial arts skills to create the C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense Program to educate her students how to fight back with simple verbal and physical self-defense techniques. [1]
Goliger's "C.L.A.S.S. Teacher's Manual and Instructional DVD" are used by teachers to implement the C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense program within their current curricula. Currently, the C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense program is in use in Glendale, California, Madera County, California, Colton USD in Colton, California, Henry County, Tennessee, and several school districts in upstate New York, Florida, Louisiana, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland and California. Since its start in 1999, the C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense program has been credited with saving several children's lives, as cited by the Glendale News-Press - Glendale, California, the Crescenta Valley Sun - La Crescenta, California, and the Foothill Leader - Burbank/Glendale, California. Goliger is the creator and owner of the C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense program and has written all the instructional and information materials used by the program.
Goliger wrote and self-published "I Need to be SAFE: I'm Worth It!-How to Protect Your Child from Danger" (2006), an approach to self-defense that gives children safety tools they need to recognize danger before something happens and the ability to flee if attacked by surprise. The book shows parents how to work with their child using techniques to sharpen awareness skills and is illustrated with step-by-step photos and captions for each of the 32 self-defense techniques. On October 18, 2007, Janet's book was awarded the IRWIN BOOK AWARD by the Book Publicists of Southern California for Best Community Service.
Goliger has been teaching physical education since 1978. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and a Master of Science degree in physical education and kinesiology from Florida International University. She is the author of two articles in the Association of Professional Directors' "Journal of Health and Physical Education". In June 2003, Goliger was voted "Teacher Of The Year" at La Crescenta Elementary School. On August 11, 2012 Janet Goliger was inducted into "The Masters Hall of Fame", an international Martial Arts organization, for her contributions in the martial arts and her extensive work with children in the martial arts, child safety, and incorporating self-defense programs within school districts.
In March, 2008, Janet Goliger launched her new teen safety school curriculum, "ARE THEY SAFE? : C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense Curriculum for Grades 7-12" (2008). The new curriculum for middle and high school students is specifically designed for teenagers 14-18 years old concerning situations faced by this age group in today's society. Topics include: Peer Pressure, Shakedowns, Harassment, Approached by Strangers, Being Followed, Road Rage, Internet Safety, Cyber Bullying and step-by-step Physical Techniques appropriate for this age group. The step-by-step lesson plans guide the teacher through each lesson, and also includes discussion questions, student involvement, problem solving and role-playing. Each lesson will give the student a new outlook for being proactive, safe, and defending themselves, by viewing, discussing, analyzing and practicing the various skills and techniques taught during each lesson.
