Jim Magdanz worked as a social science researcher for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game from 1981 to 2012, primarily in northwest Alaska based on Kotzebue and Nome. He was an Alicia Patterson Foundation fellow in 1979, documenting subsistence life in Shungnak, Alaska. Previously, he worked as an editor, writer, and photographer for the Des Moines Register and Tribune. He has a Bachelors of Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a PhD in Natural Resources and Sustainability from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He also studied social network analysis at the University of Washington and complex systems at the Santa Fe Institute.
