SVASONA

[edit]

SVASONA is the acronymic name of a pragmatic, randomised, open label, multicentre trial standing for "Shunt Valves plus shunt Assistant versus Shunt valves alone for controlling Overdrainage in idiopathic Normal pressure hydrocephalus in Adults". The study was initiated in 2006 by Ullrich Meier and Johannes Lemcke and has been conducted by the SVASONA study group until 2012. The aim of the study was to prove that gravitational shunt valves reduce the probability of overdrainage complications in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. The study was stopped after the planned halfway interim analysis due to a significant advantage for the treatment group with gravitational shunt valves. The results of the study have been published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry (JNNP).[1]
