John Andrews graduated from King’s College London in 1961 with a Physics degreee, and worked for 6 months in EMI’s Central Research Laboratories before joining the BBC as a Trainee Studio Manager in March 1962. After mixing and broadcasting most of the 1960s pop groups and bands and training Radio 2 staff for the introduction of stereo, he moved to EMI Broadcast Programmes (EMISON) when commercial radio started in the UK in 1973. At EMI he designed and built a stereo voice studio, supervised the conversion of an existing music studio into a 16-track facility and recruited and supervised the operational and technical staff, becoming Technical Director of EMI Audio-Visual Services in 1976. In 1977 he joined Alice (Stancoil Ltd) as Executive Director, specifying and selling audio mixers to U.K. commercial radio stations and the BBC.

In 1986 he was appointed Sales & Marketing Director at Neve, then owned by Siemens, travelling extensively to the Far East and North America. In 1990 he joined IPK Broadcast Systems as Director of Marketing, and was made redundant in 1993. After four years as a freelance, writing for IBE, Broadcast Hardware, Line Up and Audio Media and consulting for several audio companies, he joined Solid State Logic in 1997 as Marketing Director, and again travelled extensively, particularly to Europe, Japan and the USA.

Following a moderately severe motor accident which coincided with a change of management at SSL, John reverted to the freelance world in 2001, and was contracted by Studer in 2002 to undertake the company’s press and PR functions and assist in the preparation of product and corporate literature; this contract was completed in 2004. John was Director of Membership Services for the International Association of Broadcasting Manufacturers (IABM) until 2005 and was also a member of the IBC Conference Committee from 2002 to 2005. He was elected Chairman of the Institute of Broadcast Sound (IBS) in 1996, and retired as chairman in 2007, following which he was elected to the new position of Vice-President of the IBS.
