[edit]Joel Perez is a Puerto Rican American actor, singer, and dancer renowned for his work in several theatrical performances and television appearances. Perez was born in Boston and grew up in Lawrence, MA[1]. His father is a Pentecostal minister, and he was first introduced to singing at a young age in church[2]. He graduated from Central Catholic in Lawrence in 2004[1].
College
[edit]Perez began his involvement in theater his freshman year of college at Tufts University. He played the lead role in Torn Ticket II’s production of Children of Eden[3]. Initially, Perez was a pre-med student but changed majors sophomore year when he realized that he enjoyed drama much more than chemistry[4]. His choice to become a drama major was solidified after playing a role in Hair[3]. His junior year, Perez studied abroad at the British Drama Academy in London[3]. During this time, Perez also had a small role in a commercial for Air Jordan shoes[3]. He was an active member of the Association of Latin American Students (ALAS), an organization which helped him become an activist for the Latinx community[5].

[edit]Before booking a role in “In the Heights,” Perez was working in the Boston area. He moved to New York and was waiting tables while looking for a job in theater[5].
Fun Home
[edit]In a documentary entitled Working in the Theater: Before the Show by the American Theater Wing, Perez explained that Fun Home was a play about good storytelling and centering those voices that have been underrepresented in theater and film. The protagonist is a lesbian woman, and Perez explains that he can relate to this as a Hispanic man[7]. Fun Home marked Perez's debut on Broadway[1].

Broken Box Mime Theater Company
[edit]Perez has been a member of the Broken Box Mime Theater Company in New York since its inception in 2011 [9][10]. Broken Box finds its roots in a student-run mime troupe named HYPE at Tufts University[7]. His work as a mime serves as a “home-base” away from the glitz and glamour of Broadway[10]. Creating a skit is a collaborative process between actors and not primarily guided by a playwright[10]. Most of the company’s pieces are accompanied by contemporary music, which helps establish a mood for a given performance[10]. Broken Box won the 2014 New York Innovative Theater Award for Outstanding Ensemble[11].
