Jonathan Beer
Mariachi Wedding Singer

Introduction

[edit]

Hi, I'm Jonathan. I'm currently pursuing a master's in Computer Science (specializing in Human Computer Interaction), and am one of your TAs for this course. I helped Blair create the CIS*2050 DE course over the last two summers, and was a TA for the course last summer (the first time it was run). We worked out a lot of the glitches last year and have improved the course this year based on the feedback from last year's students.

Personal Life

[edit]

I was born in Madoc, Ontario, which is one of Eastern Ontario's best kept secrets [1]. I recently performed my second gig as a wedding singer (see my profile picture), where I dressed as a mariachi and led a (drunken) sing-along, somehow ending up on my chair, wearing my sunglasses at night, belting out "You are my sunshine" with a crowd of aging Italians. Thanks be to grappa.

Furthermore, I just put my 1982 Honda CM 450 Custom motorbike on the back of my friend's truck, as he's taking it to his friend to get the carb overhauled. Though I'm not particularly mechanically inclined, last fall I decided it would be smart to take the carb out and attempt to fix it on my own. As it turns out, going to university isn't the only way to get an expensive education.

Education and Academic Career

[edit]

I attended CHSS in Madoc for my highschool, where I won a number of academic awards. I then came to the University of Guelph on a President's scholarship and completed an undergraduate degree in Computing and Information Science in 2003. After some years of work and travel, I returned to the University of Guelph in 2009 to pursue a Master's degree in Computer and Information Science.

Hobbies

[edit]

I love to do the following:

  • play guitar (specifically as a wedding singer, or while walking down the street on a summer day, bringing joy to the deck-sitters)
  • ride my bike
  • cook
  • play fantasy sports
  • ride my motorbike

Recently, I've started playing fantasy sports. Over Christmas, I created a program that:

  1. parses nhl.com[2] for player statistics
  2. parses my fantasy hockey league [3] for the league setup
  3. outputs who the best players are for my league setup based on previous years
