Karate Career

[edit]

George Carruthers began his training in Shotokan karate in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1972 with Gene Dunnett and then Jim Wood, as a member of what was to become, the Karate Union of Scotland (KUS). The KUS, both North and South, came under the auspices of the late master Keinosuke Enoeda and his assistants Hideo Tomita and later Masao Kawasoe of the Japan Karate Association (JKA). During his 2-year stay in South Africa he trained with the Geyer brothers, Derrick and Keith at their dojo in Germiston, Transvaal (JKA-South Africa) and also with Chris Antony, now a 5th Dan with the Karatenomichi World Federation and Mikio Yahara, in Benoni, South Africa. He left the KUS in 1980 after moving to Saudi Arabia and joined the British Shotokan Karate Association under Mr. Charles Mack. In 1988 he started his own association, the British Shotokan Karate Union and in the early 90’s was affiliated to Kawasoe sensei and the United Kingdom Traditional Karate Federation. Moving with his profession to the Midlands of England in 1994, he began training with Charles Gidley and the British Shotokan Kyogi. It was under them that he took his 6th dan in Manchester(Britain-Netherlands Union of the JKA), with Sumi Yoshikazu 8th Dan, a member of Asai Tetsuhiko's faction of the JKA, in 1996. He also holds 6th Dan with the WKF.

In 2003, on affiliating with the Japan Shotokan Karate Association and Abe Keigo, he along with Gidley sensei formed a JSKA affiliated group in the UK (JSKA-Great Britain) which, at the behest of Abe and although retaining autonomy, all JSKA groups in Great Britain are now unified within. Carruthers is a member of both the JSKA and JSKA-GB Shihankai and holds the office of JSKA-GB Chairman. In his younger days he was regarded as a competent, competition fighter at association level and has fought in both national and international tournaments. He has taught and refereed in America, Europe and the Middle East, and trained with some of Shotokan’s most senior instructors. He was graded to 7th Dan by the JSKA in New York during the World Championships in 2006 and holds JSKA 'A' class Instructor, JSKA 'A' Examiner and JSKA 'A' Referee/Judge certification. He is a fellow and was awarded the shogo (title) Kyoshi, with the International Shotokan-ryu Karate-do Shihankai (ISKS), within which he currently holds the position of ISKS Chairman. He is renowned for his belief that karate is a true ‘martial’ art and in his karate-jutsu approach to both his training and teaching.
