Harriet Gillett

Self-taught painter Harriet Gillett, who was born in East Yorkshire, United Kingdom, in 1995, is presently based in London. She received training at the Royal Drawing School under the guidance of her friend Dexter Brown after studying literature at Edinburgh. She has participated in numerous UK exhibitions, and private collectors throughout the world own her artwork. She grew up surrounded by classic and vintage cars, so they have been a natural topic for further her fascination in using color to depict movement and energy. Hairriet Gillett is a painter and printmaker from London whose vibrant and fluid pieces explore aspects of contradiction within memory and nostalgia and provide some level of escape. Her work veers between concerns with identification, surveillance, and our interactions with myths and the natural world. About

Harriet, who is dyslexic, investigates the impact this has on her work by establishing unexpected connections between ideas that other people might perceive as being in opposition to one another. She inspires other artists as someone who is dyslexic but can be creative and adventurous. Harriet frequently juxtaposes seemingly unrelated elements or subjects, blurring the boundaries between tradition and modernity, abstraction and figuration, and dream and reality. This strategy fits with the artist's "narrative, flowing, and psychological" aesthetic. For instance, mixing watercolour colours to indicate fluidity or applying organic oil over acidic spray paint. Accomplishments

Harriet graduated from City and Guilds Art School with a BA in English Literature and an MA in Fine Art. She was shortlisted for the Ingram prize in 2020 and has exhibitions this year, including Delphian at the Saatchi Gallery and a two-person show at London's Soho Revue. She now resides and works in London, but she is originally from East Yorkshire. In the UK, Harriet has displayed her art in venues like Blue Shop Cottage and All-Mouth Gallery. A new, UK-based conscientious gallery venture launched in 2020, Unit 1 Gallery Workshop, and Purslane Art both hosted exhibitions of her work. She was also recently shortlisted for the Ingram Prize.

History

East Yorkshire native Harriet Gillett earned her BA in English Literature from Edinburgh University in 2017 and her Graduate Diploma in Fine Art from the City and Guilds of London Arts School in 2021. Gillett creates composite imagery based on personal experience and draws further influence from literature, music, folklore, and art history while working from a blend of observational sketching and imagination. She uses a variety of mediums and techniques, frequently combining seemingly incompatible components to playfully conflate traditional and modern, abstraction and figuration, dream and reality. Gillett recently had art shown in London and online, including Purslane Art and Unit 1 Gallery Workshop, and she was selected for the Ingram prize.
