Significant adverse effects[1][edit]

  • Acute kidney injury (under 1% incidence)
  • Diabetic retinopathy (complications: 3% to 7%; vitreous hemorrhage: 1%; blindness: under 1% incidence)
  • Gallbladder disease (Under 1% incidence)
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms: the main symptoms are Abdominal pain (6 - 20% incidence), constipation (Adolescents 6%, adults 3 - 24% incidence), diarrhea (9 - 30% incidence), nausea (16 - 44% incidence) and vomiting (adolescents 36%, adults 5 - 24% incidence). Generally, doses are slowly increased to mitigate this adverse effect.
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (under 1% incidence)
  • Medullary thyroid carcinoma
  • Pancreatitis (under 1% incidence)
