The term rake refers to the sloped timber on the outside facing edge of a roof running between the ridge and the eave.[1] On a typical house, any gable will have two rakes, one on each sloped side.
A rake is the sloped correlate to an eve. Whereas an eve runs horizontal to the ground, a rake always runs at a slope but otherwise serves the same purpose as an eve. Rakes (also sometimes called raking timbers or ...) are supported by a series of lookouts.
