Sociological trends and ideas from fictitious future to current reality
[edit]1 Objective I propose to add to as well as edit the page being created for sociological themes and advancements in technology in the book, Rainbows End.
2 Interest This is interesting because although the book shows technological advances far ahead of its time, many trends in current society show that we may very well share some of these characteristics. These developments have greatly altered the way we interact as a society.
3 Background reading By reading the book Rainbows End in addition to biographical material I will develop a sense of how Vernor Vinge, author of Rainbows End, viewed the world we lived in today and how he developed these futuristic ideas. I will then use sociological texts to extract ideas with which I will compare our society and Vinge's, making note of apparent changes in interaction of people within the society in similar aspects.
4 General Plan See above.
5 Collaborators I will be working alone.
6 Concept from Starks Book
1 "We can understand ourselves and our intimates much better if we can place ourselves within a larger framework" [Sociological Imagination, pg. 7]. 2 I will use this idea to show how trends in technology within Rainbows End relate to us as a society now and how these ideas can effect us individually.
