Ashwini Sharan

Biography[edit] Ashwini Sharan was born in Patna Bihar, in 1970 He migrated to USA with his parents (Guru and Kumud) as an infant in 1971 , lived in NYC and then moved to Edison NJ where he got his High School diploma from J.P.Stevens High School . He got his BS Degree from Bostion University and MD Degree from UMDNJ (University of Medicine and Dentistry , NJ) . He did his residency in Neuro Surgery from University of Connecticut, Hartford CT and Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA. He did his fellowship in The Cleveland Clinic Foundation . He married Kanu Priya , MD has 2 daughters Isha and Maansi.

I am an experienced neurosurgeon with a specialty focus in epilepsy surgery, pain and s pinal implants. I have personally operated on over 6000 patients with epilepsy, pain – including Migraine, Parkinson’s Disease and spinal problems. In addition, I successfully administered the projects (e.g. staffing, research projections, budget), collaborated with other researchers, and produced over 150 peer reviewed publications. I hold a number of leadership positions including being the President of the North American Neuromodulation Society – which is the largest education forum for Neuro-modulation worldwide and I am also the President Elect of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. As a result of these previous experiences, I am aware of the importance of frequent communication among project members and of constructing a realistic research plan, timeline and budget. Finally, I have been surgical PI in 3 RCT on the use of occipital nerve stimulation for Migraine and I have both designed, executed, and participated in a number of other surgical FDA and non-FDA studies in neurosurgery. I am also an active collaborator on DARPA and NIH grants. In summary, I have demonstrated record of successful and productive research projects in an area of high relevance for our population, and my expertise and experience have prepared me to lead the proposed project.

I have been recently appointed as Chief Medical Officer at Medtronic Neuromodulation Operating Unit ·

Our experiments examine how spatial knowledge is represented by individual cells in the human medial temporal lobe. We test the hypothesis that human navigation is supported by networks of place and grid cells, each of which help encode a person's location in a spatial environment by activating at individual locations and groups of locations, respectively. We probe the functional roles of grid and place cells in human spatial navigation and memory by directly performing single cell neuronal human recording activity of cells from epilepsy patients performing a computer virtual-navigation task. . Occipital I have been performing occipital nerve stimulation for migraine since 2005 and performing spinal cord stimulation for pain since 1997. I have published numerous time in the field both on scientific mechanisms of action, surgical techniques and clinical outcome. I have personally authored the analysis of the adverse events from the largest clinical trial performed in the space to date. Our lab has worked on the mechanisms of action of this therapy with rodents and with PET scan in humans.
