Personal History

Dr. Kahabi Isangula

Kahabi Ganka Isangula, (1979-), is a Tanzanian Medical Doctor and Public Health expert currently undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of New South Wales in Australia. He was born on 16th June 1979 in a very small village called Nyang’ombe on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria in Tanzania to parents, namely Benedictory I. Tonthira and Regina M. Iranga. His parents still live in this poor, peaceful village of fishermen where cassava and tilapia are the primary food. From a very young age, even before starting a primary school, He often went fishing with his father.


Education

He joined a local primary school in his village in 1989 meanwhile continuing to fish on his own upon returning from school each day. Despite mixing studies and fishing, he was one of the top students at the primary school. He was transferred to Shinyanga after one of his elder cousins had taken note of his performance in primary school. He later joined the Ihungo Secondary School in 1996. It was during this time that the MV Bukoba tragedy occurred in Lake Victoria towards the end of 1996. MV Bukoba was one of the lake ferries that carry people from other parts of the lake to Bukoba. The ferry sank with more than one thousand people on board. He was supposed to be traveling on the MV Bukoba that day and but he didn't. After that tragedy,he transferred me to Sengerema secondary school in 1997. In 1999, he passed the National Secondary School exams with the highest grade earning me a spot at Tabora Boys High School, where only those scoring highest on their exams were granted admission during that time. He graduated from Tabora school in 2002.

In 2003 he joined medical studies at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar Es Salaam graduating in 2008 with a Doctor of Medicine Degree. Other institutions attended includes;

1)The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health graduating in 2012 with a Masters Degree in Public Health

2)The University of People, where he graduated in 2014 with an associate degree in business administration

3)The University of New South Wales, where he is currently undertaking a PhD at the School Public Health and Community Medicine]

Work

1) Offered Medical Advise to Good Neighbors Tanzania, Shinyanga for the Kishapu Maternal and Child Health Project

2) Worked as a Deputy Project Director / Senior Manager, Organizational Capacity Building, Tanzania- Institutional Capacity Building Project (TZ-ICB) for Management Sciences for Health (MSH)

3) Worked for Sikika as a researcher. His work includes Where the Doctor's are and Moral and ethical Dilemma during the doctor's strike.

4) Worked as Program Officer for PMTCT & Care and Treatment Program for Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Mtwara Field Office, Tanzania.

5) Worked as a Zone Coordinator for Health, HIV/AIDS and Malaria World Vision Tanzania, Lake Zone, Shinyanga.

6) Worked as a Medical Doctor (Intern) for Mwanayamala Hospital, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
