João Henrique of Orléans-Braganza, Prince of Orléans-Braganza, né le 25 avril 1954, nicknamed Dom Joãozinho, is a Brazilian photojournalist, royalist and agricultural environmentalist. Part of the Petrópolis branch of the House of Orléans-Braganza, he is a member of the Brazilian imperial family.
Family
[edit]João Henrique of Orléans-Braganza is the only child of Prince João Maria of Orléans-Braganza (1916-2005) and Princess Fatima Toussoun of Egypt (1923-1990, born Fatima Scherifa Chirine), widow of Prince Hassan Toussoun of Egypt and daughter of Egyptian aristocrats Ismail Chirine Bey and Aicha Musallam.
Through his father, he is the great-great-grandson of the emperor Pedro II of Brazil (1825-1891) and through his mother, he is descended from the Chirin, a Crimean Muslim dynasty leading one of the seven tribes of the Golden Horde of Genghis Khan and a cousin of the Russian princely Meshchersky family.
In 1986, he married Brazilian architect Stella Christina Lutterbach (born 1958), also involved in Brazilian humanitarian efforts. They divorced in 2009. João Henrique married Anna Claudia Alves de Oliveira Mell in 2013.
From his first marriage, he has two children:
- João Philippe of Orléans-Braganza (born 1986), who holds an MBA in economics and business administration and works as a financial consultant. In 2013 João Philippe married graphic designer Dona Yasmine Paranaguà, granddaughter of the Brazilian diplomat Paulo Henrique Paranaguá (ambassador to Morocco, then Venezuela) and descendant of Don João Lustosa da Cunha Paranaguá (1821-1912), Marquis of Paranaguá, senator, Minister of Justice, and then prime minister of the Empire of Brazil. They have two children: Mia Isabel (born 2015) and João Antonio (born 2017).
- Maria Cristina of Orléans-Braganza (born 1989), who is affected by Down syndrome.
Biography
[edit]As a young man, Prince João received much attention from Brazilian media, which made much of his physique and his fondness for surfing at a time when the sport was not yet popular in Brazil. In the 1970s he received the nickname Dom Joãozinho.
Leveraging his fame, Prince João has immersed himself in the fields of ecology and the conservation of Brazilian historical and cultural heritage[1]. In 1977, he delved into photography, eventually publishing his first book, Rio Imperial, eleven years later. Today, Prince João is a recognized artist, having authored eight works and curated numerous exhibitions in Brazil and France, including at the Espace Pierre Cardin[2]. However, his enduring passion lies in the preservation and promotion of his country's grandeur. Residing in the city of Paraty, he worked for several years toward its recognition in 2019 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As the father of a daughter with Down syndrome, he has actively engaged in research and advocacy against this genetic disorder. His former wife Stella Lutterbach Leão currently serves as the president of the Brazilian Federation of Down Syndrome Associations, an umbrella organization comprising over fifty associations.[1]
João Henrique d'Orléans-Bragance is also a businessman actively involved in tourism development. Additionally, he owns his own brand of cachaça, Maré Alta[5].
L’écologie et la sauvegarde du patrimoine ne sont cependant pas les seules activités sociales de João d'Orléans-Bragance. Père d’une fille atteinte de trisomie 21, Maria Cristina (née en 1989), il s'est engagé avec son épouse Stella dans la recherche et la lutte contre cette maladie génétique. Cette dernière est ainsi présidente de la Fédération brésilienne des Associations contre le syndrome de Down, qui regroupe plus d’une cinquantaine d’associations. Le couple divorce en 2009.
João Henrique d'Orléans-Bragance est également un homme d’affaires impliqué dans le développement touristique[2]. Il possède par ailleurs sa propre marque de cachaça, Maré alta[3].
