Paul Violi is a contemporary American poet. He is the author of eleven books of poetry, a book of prose collaborations with artist Dale Devereux Barker, and his work has also appeared in numerous anthologies including The Oxford Book of American Poetry. He has received two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships in poetry, a John Ciardi Lifetime Achievement Award, and The Morton Dauwen Zabel Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Violi was born in New York in 1944 and is an alumni of Boston University.
Violi teaches in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University and in the graduate writing program at New School University.
His books include Overnight (Hanging Loose Press, 2007), Breakers: Selected Longer Poems (Coffee House Press, 2000), Selected Accidents, Pointless Anecdotes (Hanging Loose Press 2002), Fracas (Hanging Loose Press 1998) and The Curious Builder (Hanging Loose Press 1993).
