No one noticed when a songwriting phenomenon named Missy Elliott appeared in the industry as one forth of the R & B group of Jodeci going by the name of “Sista”. Yet when the world got a taste of what she really had to offer we were all hooked. One gets the same feeling upon hearing Keisha Starr for the first time. Her sultry vocals are catchy and pleasant to hear.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland as Keisha Antonette Wizzart, this college graduate grew up in a house full of music. With her West Indian heritage, she watched attentively as her father wrote songs and played the piano and mother sang with other close family members to form the first reggae collective in Baltimore called the “Determination Band.” Keisha Starr traveled with the family band since the age of four, modeling their devotion to music and appreciation for distinctive melodies.
By the tender age of ten Keisha Starr wrote the first song of what has become a prolific list of impressive materials. Penning lyrics, with verses such as: “If I could turn back the hands of time baby you know I would/I would take back all the things I said only if I could/Because time has passed but the feeling have not/ Come back home and give love another shot.” Keisha Starr seemed to have possessed a maturity beyond her years in understanding the effectiveness of the simple sentiment of love.
She used that ability throughout her adolescent years to propel her as the author and star of several school plays, and talent shows; by grade seven she was published author of poetry, wining numerous writing contests.
Keisha Starr was destined for success and knew that she had the talent, but wanted the brains to go along with it. She received her Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Baltimore City Community College in 2001 and went on to obtain her Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education Human Development from Coppin State University in 2005. From that point on, Keisha Starr developed a passion for the human services and social work industry. She loved to help others, which motivated her to obtain her Master's Degree in Human Services, with a concentration in Marriage & Family Counseling from Coppin State University/University of Baltimore in 2012. She is currently working towards establishing her Ph.D in Multidisciplinary Approach to Human Services with a concentration in Marriage & Family Counseling. She is actively involved in many community outreach work and has a desire to start her own nonprofit human services agency within low-income communities.
Unable to avoid the writing bug, she continues to write songs for other artists. Keisha Starr has come to a crossroad that most songwriters eventually face; “Will the world accept me as just a songwriter, or should I deliver these songs from my heart with my vocals the way that they were originally conceived?” Giving a listen to a sampler of her upcoming project titled, “True Confessions,” the public will be glad that she chose the latter. Keisha Starr has been contacted from major record executives such as Randy Acker from Island Def Jam and Mannie Edwards from Universal Records for her outstanding songwriting abilities. She has worked with major industry producers in the game such as Larry “Pop” Summerville from Warner Brothers and Red Spyda from Red Beam Entertainment. She has also opened up for heavy hitters such as Elephant Man. In addition, Keisha Starr is also a published author. You can find her short story, “Dying to be a Star” in Nikki Turner’s Street Chronicle: A Woman’s Work, which went on the New York Bestsellers List. With a drive for being in control of her own destiny, Keisha Starr started her own publishing company, "ExSTARdinary Publishing" in 2013 with business partner Tyran Hill and has released an anthology with Monique Hall titled, "Diary of a Boss Chic." Keisha Starr is gearing to release another literary hit titled, "Jamaican Me Go Crazy" in Summer of 2014.
Keisha Starr current musical compositions consists of songs such as “Radio”, “Black Rose”, and “Sextacy” with lyrics such as “If sex was a drug everyday I’ll be high/Waiting on you and that’s no lie/If sex was a drug you would be my host/And I’ll be one smoke from a overdose.” These songs combine risqué yet potent lyrics along with beautifully constructed melodies. Her sweet, airy tones help each tune walk a thin line between teenage pop and vintage R & B.
When asked, what’s the secret to successfully writing a timeless song or a successful book, Keisha Starr replies “Write what you feel and not what you think others want to hear. If it comes from your heart, it canjhfhwrong.” You can honestly hear and see in each and every one of her songs and stories that she’s truly penning from her soul. Keisha Starr plans to take the world by storm, and she’s coming strong so look out!
