Map Share is a proprietary map technology launched by TomTom, the Dutch navigation solution provider, in June 2007. Map Share allows users to make changes to the maps on their navigation devices and share them with others.
Digital Maps[edit]
Map Share was created to address the problem faced by navigation solution providers i.e. delivering up-to-date digital maps of road networks that are changing by an estimated 10%-15% every year [1].
Digital map data suppliers receive thousands of map error reports every month. These errors are checked using sophisticated vehicle mounted equipment [2]. Once changes have been compiled they are included in new map data releases, which in turn are processed by satellite navigation providers [3]. Due to the complexity of the process it takes time for errors to be incorporated in new map versions and made available to consumers.

TomTom’s Map Share is unique in allowing drivers to make changes to their maps directly on their navigation devices. Drivers can block or unblock streets, change the direction of traffic, edit street names and add, edit or remove points of interest (POIs).
Improvements can be shared with the Map Share™ community. Users who connect their devices to their computers can download and upload map corrections on a daily basis. This is done through TomTom HOME.
