Purpose of Article[edit]
There are now websites and publications on patterns for various topics such as software development. However, when come to project risk management is concerned, there is only one notable one at Appropriate Process Movement. Even then, the articles judging by the dates, have not been actively updated since and there are many broken links. Furthermore, the articles there could not be edited publicly to make corrections.
Therefore, this wiki article was created for the purpose of:
- cataloguing all patterns pertaining risks and their corresponding responses.
- allowing subject-matter experts on the topic to come to the fore and contribute to the article.
Documentation[edit]
In software engineering, the general format to be used has been the one mentioned in Design Pattern Documentation. However, the format is better suited to describe a solution pattern rather than a problem pattern.
In order not to reinvent the wheel, the format used in Appropriate Process Movement is used here. The only exception is that instead grouping Prevention, Amelioration and Cure together as a single section, they have been broken up as individual sections.
The reason for this is that a reader at planning stage of a project will be more interested in the Prevention part. Those who are in the execution stage but who have not planned for the risk would be more interested in the Amelioration and the Cure.
In summary the sections to document a risk are:
- Name: The name of the risk
- Description: Abstract Summary of the risk
- Related Risks
- Relevant In: E.g. Project Management; Business Analysis; or Process Improvement.
- Discussion: Details of the risk
- Prevention, Amelioration and Cure: These section(s) describes the mitigation measures. The three may be documented separately when a measure is not applicable for all three.
