James Schaeffer (/ʤeɪmz ʃeɪfɜr/; Born November 2, 1994) is an American award-winning[1] broadcast journalist. He has worked as a political commentator, showrunner, and executive producer for television programs on Vegas PBS and streamed video content. He acted as an advisory board-member for the Scarlet and Gray Free Press[2]. Schaeffer worked as a radio host and commentator for political programs on 91.5 KUNV and AM 720 KDWN[3].

Early life and education

Schaeffer grew up in Henderson, Nevada and attended Lake Mead Christian Academy from 1999-2008. In 2007 he was in the Apple program "One to One" computer learning initiative[4].

He attended Foothill High School from 2008-2013. While in high school Schaeffer and the school's team recorded and produced Every 15 Minutes presentations[5] at high schools throughout Clark County. During his time in high school, Schaeffer was the news director[6] for the broadcast news program, FST NEWS[7].

In April 2013, while in high school Schaeffer interviewed[8] a Foothill High School graduate who was attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the Boston Marathon Bombing MIT Shooting.

In July 2013, Schaeffer competed in the SkillsUSA (Nationals) competition in "Television (Video) Editing" after winning first in the state of Nevada with his partner Gino Alvarez[9].

In August 2016, Schaeffer took the position of host and associate-producer on the round-table show The Scramble[10], and produced two seasons of the program[11]. The Scramble had at one time been hosted by Tomi Lahren[12].

In October 2016, UNLV-TV produced coverage of the 2016 U.S. presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump[13]. Schaeffer conducted interviews, moderated debates, and provided live commentary of the debate[14].

In May 2017, Schaeffer in conjunction with the Scarlet & Gray Free Press coordinated an investigation into voter fraud in the university student government election. The 3-part investigative story was reported[15] through UNLV-TV's news division, Studio-G.

Career

After attending the last preseason Vegas Knights Hockey Game at the T-Mobile Arena on October 1, 2017, Schaeffer conducted interviews with victims from the 2017 Las Vegas Shooting for CNN and CNNe. The morning after, he reported from within the Mandalay Bay with Denise Hernandez for 91.5 KUNV about the situation inside the building. The story was picked up[16] by KULR-TV in Billings, Montana.

Schaeffer attended the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Pacific Southwest Chapter award ceremony. He delivered a speech[19] at the ceremony about UNLV-TV's coverage following the 2017 Las Vegas shooting.
