Definition

A mermaid is a water animal that is male or female that is said to be half human and half fish. With tails and scales like fish and upper bodies shaped and built like humans, mermaids have been a fascinating topic for centuries. The real question is are they real or fake? This article will take you through the evidence that describes this anomaly that has been troubling the human race for a very very long time.

Background Information

Mermaid sightings have been apparent since the 1600's. At that time, in holland, the story was that a woman had come onto shore injured when the dutch culture decided to take her in and nurse her to health. She then adopted the culture of the dutch and even learned to speak there language.

Another sighting that dates way back when is said to be in 1614 when Captain John Smith found this creature and instantly fell in love with her beauty and grace. That is, until he realized she was scaly with a tail from the waist down. This is where the beauty myth of the mermaid began. Captain John Smith used these words to describe her: her long green hair imparted to her an original character that was by no means unattractive.[1]

The Evidence

From there on out there have been hoaxes and false evidence of mermaid existence and since the 1600's we have come up with our own ideas about how a mermaid should look and act. The Animal Planet has several videos of raw footage showing real live evidence of mermaid sightings. One video catches a video of a mermaid on a diving vessel and sounds from the ocean that sound odd. 2 cameras were set up and then compared back to back with eachother showing some sort of human-like, fish-like creature coming into contact with the vessel Diving vessel video footage

Another video with raw footage shows an oil derrick with a slight glimpse of something swimming by. That something shows a longer fish like animal with a tail swimming to catch another fish. You can view it for yourself here!

Are Mermaids Considered True Anomalies Yes. This is because an anomaly is something that is not part of the norm and is not understood in nature. Merfolk (Mermaids and Mermen) have been part of mythical stories that have been passed down from century to century and have never been proven. This situation could be explained scientifically without having to use the term "Mermaid." A simple explanation could be just another fish that we have never discovered before that is shaped similar to a human with a fin. Us exaggerating the facts by saying that mermaids are beautiful people that are half human are what makes the term an anomaly. These explanations could be scientific because we could describe them using one, if not all, of our senses. Seeing, hearing, touching, tasting and smell could all be used to describe these scientific explanations. You cannot base scientific theories over someone just bluntly stating they have seen or caught on video (false videography). He said, she said is not something that science supports. Even these days, we can never trust evidence to be one hundred percent true. Without exploring the evidence deeper using scientific method we cannot deem Mermaids or any other sort of anomaly a theory or fact.
