Korean drinking games (Korean: 술게임, Chinese: 韩国喝酒游戏, Japanese: 韓国のお酒ゲーム) are lively and fast-paced games played in any forms of gathering to enlighten the mood and induce binge drinking. Such games are deeply embedded in the Korean drinking culture.[1]
The game is played with many songs sing along by every people in the drinking party. When people want to begin the game they have to sing: “XXX(name) ga~ jo a ha nun~ random~ game!, mu soon~ game!, game~ start!” (Korean). After that XXX (The one who’s name is called) has to start the game within 3 seconds by singing out the theme song for each game. Once the game has ended, the loser has to drink a cup of alcohol placed in front of him/her. While he/she is drinking the alcohol, rest of them have to sing another song called bgm (background music) in order to heat up the atmosphere.
Usage
[edit]Drinking games take place in most of the drinking scene in Korea, especially when people first meet one another. The game is usually practiced when people want to know more about others. As the game requires many memorization of names and their characteristics, it boosts the process of familiarizing with one another. Moreover, drinking game heats up the mood. As the game forces people to constantly drink, people get drunk much faster than usual, creating more lively and warmer atmosphere.
Background
[edit]In the Korean culture, people become more intimate with each other by sharing their concerns while drinking alcohol. Therefore, some people drink to build up strong bonds with others. When meeting with new groups of people, however, drinking was not enough to break the walls and lighten up the mood. As a solution, the drinking game was introduced to instantly get familiar with one another and have more fun in the party. Also, people with already intimate relationship played the game to enjoy and boost the drinking process, encouraging binge drinking. Such pleasant feelings obtained from drinking leads to series of parties within a day, so people will roam around many pubs in the surrounding area to start drinking once again.
Apartment Game
[edit]One person calls out any number, and at the same time, all members gather their both hands in a stack. Then, from the bottom to up, each person takes out a hand and put it on top once again, counting the number. Whoever’s hand in the position of the assigned number must drink.
Baskin Robins 31
[edit]The objective of this game is to not call out 31. Each people take turn in counting the numbers up to 1 to 3. The person has the freedom to decide how many numbers he or she calls out in each turn. The game goes on until they count up to 31. Whoever calls out 31 must drink.
To set up, one floats an empty small cup in a bigger cup half-filled with beer. Then, each person takes turn in carefully pouring soju into the small cup. Whoever makes the cup sink must drink.
Son Byung Ho Game
[edit]All members hold up all their fingers, and each takes turn in calling out what people may have done. If one comes under the category, he or she must fold one of their fingers. Whoever with all of their fingers folded must drink.
Hoon Min Jung Eum Game
[edit]One person calls out two initial consonants (in Korean syllable). Then, people quickly shout the word that fits into the assigned category, and the word must not overlap with what people have already said. The last person to come up with the word must drink.
1. All the drinking games lead to two purpose. One is having fun from the games. Another is to make friends more collective as well as to make the atmosphere more lively in the form of drinking more beer.
2. There are clear rules in the drinking games so the games contain a collective spirit as well as a entertainment spirit.
3. The games are based on the reaction ability, the skills of pouring beer or impressing personal experiences.
4. It is easy to understand and take part in the games.
5. The games need few tools or necessary facilities to use.
Effects
[edit]The drinking game has spreaded from Korea to many other countries creating more ways for people around the world to get more familiar with one another through playing simple but fun drinking game.[6]
One of the tragic case occurred is the death of a 19 year-old-girl partly due to excessively playing drinking games. In the orientation party for freshmen, students were forced to drink as they played the games. As a consequence of binge drinking, the girl fell down in a faint and was immediately taken to a hospital; she was still unconscious, barely able to breath and pulse. This incidence, indeed, is not the only tragedy related to the drinking game.
