OLUFUKO CULTURAL FESTIVAL HITS OUTAPI[edit]

Olufuko is a traditional event where you girls are turned into bride without grooms that was practiced 80 years ago. The Omusati Regional Council worked together with the Outapi Constituency as well as traditional authority in Omusati region. Later the Namright in conjuction with the Evangelican Lutheran Church in Namibia interfered against the event.[1] In Augast this year,an amazing event took place in the far north of Namibia Omusati region inOutapi which was officially launched by the founding father on the nation Sam Nujoma.[2]

Background information about the event[edit]

There are other events that can be hosted however, olufuko is exceptional from other due to the fact that it emphasis on four major that where practised by our for-father.[3] This is done with the aim of keeping the culture in place. The event aims at preparing young girls to mother hood, how they can take of their husbad as wellas the family. The event does not concern with anyone's virginity but perhaps if they either pregnant.[4]

This is a long term progect that is aimed at developing and improving the tourism industry for the region. The mottor of the event was "Culture: Our Pride" as stated by Dr. Shapaka Kapolo at the time of the event.[5]


Tradition and Culture[edit]

Cultural practice include olufuko, ezaleko lyonheta, ekululo and etenda as known by their Oshiwambo names. The event has been entertained by cultural groups in their cultural attires and keep the event more live. Among other oshizimba, omagadhi goongombe and onguma are some of the traditional cosmetics as they where shown at the time of the event.]].[6]


Traditional food and drink[edit]

Oshiwambo tradition have food rich in the nutrient and minerals required in for a balance diet. This includes: Omalovu giilya, owalende epwati, omagongo to mention but just a few.]].[7]

Not in favour[edit]

The Namright see this event as the discrimition of human right as most girls are being forced to part take in such event. The human right organisation prompts ou that this will result into young girls being forced into marriage and men are encouraged to have sex with children. It goes on and furthe points out that it increases the transfare of Sexually transmitted disease and being humliated since they are tested about their virginity.[8]

The Evangelical Luthern Church in Namibia in Namibia do not support the event as well and see's it as a sin. The church stated that any member of that church who took part in the ivent have to ask God for forgeveness as it is a sin.[9]
