I hail from Dorsetshire and am a keen aquarist and builder of scale models in my spare time. My greatest passion is the quest for historical knowledge; although neither a professional or academically qualified historian (which is attributable to a poor selection of subjects on my part at secondary school) I have read widely around many periods of European and Western history, often tending toward the military history of the periods in question. Personal favourite topics include the navies of the late 19th Century, the two World Wars, and lately the Romano-British period and the Normans. My interests however are eclectic and I tend to acquire knowledge randomly on a broad range of topics. Intellectually, one might describe me as a jack-of-all-trades and master of none.

I have been a fairly regular user of Wikipedia since 2009, browsing through articles covering a broad range of topics as much for fun as for genuine reference and research purposes. I see the genuine value of Wikipedia in many of the well-researched and thorough articles which I have read. I do, however, from time to time detect odd little duplications of content within some articles, or even contradictory content; it's these little niggles (for I am somewhat prone to niggles) that have encouraged me to become a more pro-active user. It is my hope that I may be able to help improve a few articles in the near future.

Recently, a personal project regarding the French ironclad warship Hoche has led me to seek out a number of different resources in order to make deeper sense of the subject. This has spurred me to consider editing the current stub-rated article, as I see the potential for expansion and clarification here. I would be keen also to add a new article about the French steamer Marechal Canrobert as several sources are available for this subject and the present reference to this vessel in the Hoche article seems to be derived from a potentially flawed source.
