Awali School was a primary school in Awali, Bahrain. The school served as an educational facility for the children of employees of the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) living in Awali. There was also an arrangement where a certain number of school places were available to children of non-Bapco employees in each academic year on payment of fees.

The school offered British primary curriculum education ranging from reception to Sixth form. The history and geography of Bahrain were also included in the curriculum, with the addition of Arabic language to Arab students and Islamic Studies to pupils who are Muslims.

History[edit]

Awali School was established on September 8, 1936, when a group of 12 BAPCO employees met with the General Manager to discuss the possibility of starting a school in Awali for employees' children.

The General Manager agreed, and by the end of 1937 two class rooms were built (which are now the school's offices) - thus becoming only the third private school in Bahrain (The American Mission School - now called the Al Raja School - was the first one, opened in 1913 and the Al Ittihad Al Ahli Achool became the second in 1923).

The first teacher in charge of Awali School was Miss Phyliss Knowles, who arrived in January 1938. Recruited from London, Miss Knowles' previous appointment had been Kampala, in Uganda, and she brought her bicycle with her from there, complete with a handle bar-mounted wicker basket. In 1941 Miss Knowles left Awali School to take up a new appointment in Zanzibar.

In those years the number of pupils was only 20, and among the few activities organized was the occasional "donkey Picnic" - donkeys were hired from Rifa'a, and while Miss Knowles and parents went ahead to the center of Jebel by car to organise the food, pupils would follow on donkeys, accompanied by the Bahraini donkey owners.
