Islahijjet is a cultural society from the beginning of XX century in Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The main building is on the list of the National monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The society gave its name to a building complex, which was build during the austro-hungarian period, and which includes : the main building, "Islahijjet Home", and four other residential and commercial buildings.

Location

The building complex is located in Brčko, in the Kolobara neighborhood, close to the historical city center. It is located close to the two rivers which are present in the center : Brka and Sava.

History

It's during the year 1907 that was created the Islahijjet (which means education or repair) Bosniak muslim society of culture and education. It was founded in Brčko by eminent people of the bosniak community like Abdullah Bukvica and Mujag Mula Mehmedović, with the purpose of improving the culture and economy of the young people of the city and the district. The society also had sub-committees with reading rooms in 6 villages.

The Islahijjet society also provided material assistance to universities around and showed support toward the training in various professions in the economy.

It has also been active in the fight against vices of all kinds.

In 1922, for the urgent needs of the Islahijjet society, a building constructed in 1912 was purchased and adapted, creating the "Islahijjet Home". The building includes rooms to reads journals, a library and, then, the society could organize talk nights and public conferences.

In 1935, a renovation has made it possible to create a "social" room with a theater stage and accomodation for more than 400 guests.

Description of the buildings

All the buildings which form the complex were built separately and during different periods.

Nevertheless, they all have the same number of floor (RDC +1) but still all have different and irregular shapes with different angles of wall surfaces and different treatment of facade and roof surfaces.

State of the buildings

"Islahijjet Home" was rehabilitated in 2009, but all the other buildings of the complex are still in a bad shape : every damages were caused by a poor maintenance and non-use of buildings.
