Action & Advocacy

Burton Snowboards was one of the first companies to acknowledge climate change issues and implement them into there companies plan. In 2007 Burton launched its "Green Mountain Project" which focused on reducing the companies environmental footprint while promoting sustainability in snowboarding. Burton teamed up with Mt.Dew to make T-Shirts, using 50% recycled plastic bottles to make there cotton t-shirts. Burton in 2020 then Laucnched the "One World" project. This project included a documentary about snowboarding as well as information for people on the ongoing issues with climate change

Burton recently committed themselves to becoming carbon neutral across all global operations. They have been measuring their global emissions in output in neutrality by their owned and leased facilities, also referred to as scope 1 & 2 emissions. Burton came out with a new plan to tackle there scope 3 emissions. Most of Burton emissions come from manufacturing and transporting their products. All this includes raw materials, production processes, and shipping products to stores worldwide. Part of Burtons commitment to scope 3 emissions is using transportation companies that are eco-friendly and practice climate safe transportation. In 2021, Burton coincided with the Paris Agreement and IPCC report and set their goals based on their recommendations tackling Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. By 2030 Burton has committed to reducing their absolute emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 42 percent and their supply chain emissions by 55 percent from their 2020 baseline.

2nd Lap was created by Burton in 2020 to allow there products to have a longer life. Burton does Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) to determine the enviromental impacts of a product throughout its entire life cycle. Burton concluded in many of there LCA's that there products were being thrown away before they should have so they created 2nd Lap which buys back old Burton gear and then gets resold to new customers for a cheaper price then before.

Outside of their direct output of carbon emissions Burton is also committed to helping build awareness for Climate Change and positively impacting everyone. Burton is a founding member of Protect Our Winters, a non-profit organization dedicated to getting the winter sports communities to raise awareness and advocate for climate change issues. Protect Our Winters was founded in 2007 and is committed to changing people’s minds and outlook on climate change by providing classes, workshops, and events to spread awareness and solutions to climate change issues.
