Corinne Geertsen (born 1953 in Salt Lake City, Utah[1] is an Arizona artist who creates digital photocollages. Her work has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries in the United States, is in collections worldwide, as well as in the permanent collections of museums.
Personal Life
[edit]Geertsen grew up in Great Falls, Montana[1], the daughter of a psychologist[2]. While in high school she received several American Cancer Society grants for work in genetic mapping research[3]. She became interested in art at an early age and exhibited in the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Education
[edit]Geertsen received her BA and MFA in drawing and printmaking from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. [4]
Work
[edit]Geertsen’s artistic work evolved from drawing and painting to digital experimentation after obtaining a computer and Adobe Photoshop in order to restore old photos of her ancestors.[5][1] She became intrigued with the possibility of creating drama by putting the restored figures in new backgrounds and adding animals, backgrounds, and objects.[5][1] Geertsen maintains a stock of over 50,000 digital images of animals, objects and backgrounds to employ in her work, adding hundreds of Photoshop layers to add textures, shadows, light balance, and visual consistency.[1][6] Thus, the details of her work are realistic, but their combination surreal.Cite error: A <ref>

Geertsen’s work spans more than a century and a half of technology. She uses Civil War and Victorian era studio portraits as source material, and digital cameras and a computer with massive memory. She has said that she enjoys the contrasts and challenges of working with multiple technologies.Cite error: A <ref>

(see the help page). For a brief time, Geertsen’s great-grandfather was Anderson’s business partner, and some of Geertsen’s ancestors are included in Anderson’s work. In 2012, BYU Special Collections commissioned a portfolio of Geertsen’s work using Anderson’s photographs, which now resides in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections Library.[7]
In 2016, Geertsen was named one of the Phoenix Area’s Top 100 Creatives by Phoenix New Times[8], and in 2020 her work was included in the Arizona Biennial Exhibition at the Tucson Museum of Art.[9]
