The diocese of Canberra and Goulburn is located within the province and state of New South Wales. The metropolitan of the province is also the Archbishop of the Sydney diocese and usually consecrates bishops. In the case of the three women bishops in the diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, the Archbishop of Sydney has formally authorised the consecration, but does not participate and deputised the Bishop of Newcastle to conduct the consecration.
