Itaipu Binacional operates the Itaipu Dam and is dually owned by the governments of Brazil and Paraguay. The company was established in 1974, following the Treaty of Itaipu, to administer the financing, construction and management of the Itaipu Dam. The company is also responsible for the management of eight binational ecological reserves that were created as a result of the establishment of the dammed reservoir. Itaipu Binacional serves both countries by providing electricity through the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, a facility with 14,000 MW of installed power capacity from 20 generating units.
