Alexander Arkadyevich Arkatov (Александр Аркадьевич Аркатов, 1890 (Russian Empire, Rechytsa) – 1961 (USA, Los Angeles)) is a Russian Jewish film director and playwright, known for works such as "L'Chaim" (Л’Хаим, 1910, as a playwright) and "Sorrows of Sarah" (Горе Сарры, 1913, as a director), both of which deal with lives in Jewish settlements in Russia.[1]
Career
[edit]Originally a journalist and a film critic, Arkatov started his career in cinema with the 1910 silent film "L'Chaim", based on a well known song from Jewish folklore, on which he worked as a playwright. He then went on to write and direct and write tens of other films while traveling all over the world doing so.
Arkatov's first work as a director was for the 1912 film "God of Vengance" ("Бог мести").
Between the years 1917 and 1918 Arkatov worked on four films regarding lives of Jewish people while located at Odessa in a partnership with the Russian film company "Mizrach" who are known for making the film "Jewish Life in Palestine".
In the year 1923 Arkatov moved to England and worked as a journalist until he move to the USA to direct films in Holywood.
Between the years 1940-1945 Arkatov served in the army as an educational film director. After being discharged from the military, Arkatov went back to direct films and also started teaching, according to his death certificate[2], religious studies as a professor in the University of California[3]
Personal life
[edit]Born November 11th 1890 in Rechytsa, The Russian Empire, Alexander Arkatov (originally named Alexander Mogilevsky) lived to 71 when he passed away at February 6th 1961 in Los Angeles, California. [4]
Arkatov lived throughout Europe and America having lived in The Russian Empire, in Austria, Germany, New York and California.
Arkatov married Tatiana Lee Arkatov (born Whittles) and together they had two daughters.[5]
Their first daughter, Victoria Charlotte Kormos (born Arkatov) was born on June 21th 1923 when the two stayed in London, England.[6]
Their second daughter, Gloria Diane Kartzinet (born Arkatov) was born on June 16th 1925 in New York, USA.[7]
Death
[edit]According to his death certificate, Arkatov passed away due to Arteriosclerotic heart disease starting about when he was 59, later on developing a Coronary occlusion and pulmonary edema, directly causing his death.[8]
